In 1961, Dr. Phulrenu Guha, freedom fighter and noted social worker of Kolkata, started Karma Kutir as a Voluntary Social Welfare Organization with other women social activists of the city. Though the immediate motto was to help and rehabilitate thousands of people who had come to Kolkata being uprooted from the former East Pakistan, the vision was to empower marginalized women with self employment. With this specific aim Karma Kutir joined hands with "All India Handicrafts Board" to plan and run "Regional Handicrafts Training Centre". The centre initially took care of the eastern and North-Eastern states and provided handicrafts training to the underprivileged women from these states. Karma Kutir successfully executed this program that was not only attended by women from the neighbouring states but also part of the student exchange program with Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Mauritius. This was the first step of Karma Kutir as working like an NGO in India, but with only welfare of the Society as a goal and this successfully materialized its plan to empower women through self employment as well as revive handicrafts of Bengal like the kantha, which had long been ignored.

Till then Karma Kutir has meticulously planned and carried out innumerable projects on various domains of social welfare and made substantial contribution in building up of strong social defence. In this long journey, Karma Kutir has worked hand in hand with many local and international NGOs, state as well as central government.

Presently the activities of Karma Kutir are focused on the following areas,
  • Projects for Capacity building and economic empowerment of women in rural and urban areas for underprivileged women through vocational training.
  • Creches for underprivileged children.
  • Centre for cultural development of underprivileged children.
Along with providing effective training facility for the underprivileged women, Karma Kutir also has arrangements to market and sell their products. They have a showroom at Gariahat in South Kolkata.

Help Karma Kutir to function better as a NGO India
